DRILL&BLAST OPTIMIZATION
Australia - Gold
The client engaged us to conduct a comprehensive final wall blasting design and optimization study at an open pit mine in Australia. The mine identified that 5 degrees of wall- steepening would free-up 128,957 Oz Gold. However, excessive crest losses were observed preventing the mine to increase the bench face angles. A 3-stage project was proposed involving the blast monitoring, advanced blast modelling and implementation of the alternative blast designs. Understanding the root causes of the crest loss via blast monitoring was fundamental in this study. Then we moved into the Phase 2 with blast modelling to identify the best potential blast design alternatives. Action plan was implemented in the Phase 3. The trials demonstrated that berm vibration was reduced significantly; fragmentation was similar (or slightly blockier) compared to the fragmentation using the old blast designs; displacement of the berm was reduced, so increased catch bench widths were attained. Over 44M USD was the ultimate prize in this project showing a remarkable result. Smarter projects can certainly deliver strong results by unlocking the hidden value.
